Barak Ben-Tor is a kosher baker worth his salt. The owner of Lax & Mandel Bakery has rolled out a new line of authentic kosher New York bagels. Ben-Tor gets the kosher-certified dough shipped from New York throughout the week.
The dough is boiled and baked to perfection in his South Euclid bakery, resulting in a bagel that is chewy on the inside and crusty on the outside.
“You know a bagel is good when you bite into it and experience a slight cracking sound, instead of a whoosh,” Ben-Tor said.
The bakery’s oversized New York bagels come in flavors including plain, sesame, poppy seed, everything, onion, black Russian (pumpernickel and onion), egg, honey whole wheat, and chocolate chip.
Ben-Tor has started his own schmear campaign. A schmear bar containing different flavors of cream cheese and bagel toppers is next to the bagel racks.
“These New York boiled bagels are the real deal,” said Ben-Tor as he bit into an egg bagel fresh from the oven. “Everything else is just a roll with a hole.”
